Course Description
This qualification is intended as an Applied General qualification equivalent in size to one A Level. It is designed for students who are interested in an introduction to the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT. Students will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information.
This vocational qualification has proved to be a popular option for our 6th form students, many of whom have gone on to study at University, it has also helped students to gain employment with IT companies, such as Sony.
Year 12
Students study Information Technology Systems in preparation for a formal assessment in the summer term. Alongside this, students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in database software in order to complete the supervised online assessment, which will also be completed in the summer term.
Year 13
students will research how businesses use social media in order to promote products/services, before planning and implementing their own social media campaign for business. Alongside this, students will study real world examples of websites used for commerce and develop skills needed to plan and implement their own website for a fictional business.
There are 4 units to complete which are assessed and are as follows:
Information Technology Systems (2 hour written examination set and marked by Pearson)
Creating Systems to Manage Information (10 hour supervised assessment of a task set and marked by Pearson and completed under supervised conditions using a computer and submitted electronically)
Using Social Media in Business (internally assessed coursework)
Website Development (internally assessed coursework)
Progression Route
The qualification, when studied with other Level 3 qualifications, is aimed at progression to higher education (i.e. to study for a degree in an information technology discipline or a degree where information technology related skills and knowledge may be advantageous), but also enables leaners to develop knowledge and skills needed for entry-level roles related to IT, including vocational apprenticeship roles and trainee/entry-level roles such as a social media specialist, web/content developer, or business analyst.
This qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses.
